Collections Conservation and the Florence G. Wallace Conservation Lab

The Collections Conservation Unit is housed in the Florence G. Wallace Conservation Lab in Giltner Hall on MSU's campus. Formerly known as Book Repair, the unit was formed in 1992 and supervised by Donna Nelson. In 1999 Nora Carr became the unit supervisor and in 2000 Eliza Gilligan became the first conservator. The work quickly outpaced the small space available on the fourth floor of the East Wing of the Main Library. After long deliberations, space was finally secured in Giltner Hall and the lab moved in March, 2004. In April 2004 Eric Alstrom became the conservator. Almost immediately upon moving into their new quarters, plans were made to renovate the space to create a more efficient workflow and to be able to increase the types of conservation services available. The renovation work was completed in March, 2006.

The Conservation Lab repairs damaged books from all MSU libraries. While its main focus is on the circulating collections, the lab is equipped to handle more complex treatments from Special Collections and other departments with old and rare (or unusual) volumes as well as flat items such as maps.
