MSU Statement On Using Copyrighted Materials

Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U.S. Code) to the authors of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. Civil and criminal remedies may be imposed for violations of an author's copyright interests. Michigan State University is committed to obeying copyright law.

Obtain Copyright Permission

The Digital & Multimedia Center assists in obtaining permissions for MSU affiliated persons. After logging in below, please provide your contact information, including name, email address, telephone number and fax number. Course or project is required for your copyright permission requests.

Please use the same email address as your previous requests (if applicable).

Please include the following information:

  • How the material is to be used and for what length of time.
  • The title and author of the work, the page numbers, ISBN/ISSN numbers for books or journals, and the publication year or edition.
  • Publisher contact information, including telephone number, address and email.
  • If the material is from a required course textbook.
  • If you plan to post the requested material online, please provide your URL
  • Please include any other pertinent information about your use of the requested material in the “Request Note” field.

Copyright holders or faculty members who wish to contact rights holders themselves are asked to use one of the following forms and to send a copy to the Digital & Multimedia Center. We serve as a central location for permissions records for all types of MSU publications except course packs and MSU Press titles.
